The Euro (EUR) strengthened against the Japanese yen (JPY) as investors turned their focus to trade negotiations on Wednesday's tariff deadline.
The yen is under pressure after U.S. President Trump announced a 25% tariff on all imports from Japan.
The current euro/Japanese yen trading is around 171.10, up 0.58% intraday, the highest level in nearly a year.
The euro strengthened due to strong German industrial output and rising investor sentiment
German industrial production was released on Monday and rebounded month-on-month in May, up 1.2%, surpassing expectations and -1.6% in the previous month.
Annual output also improved from a contraction of 2.1% to 1%, indicating the recovery momentum of manufacturing. Meanwhile, retail sales in the euro zone fell by 0.7% month-on-month in May, in line with expectations, highlighting consumers' continued prudence.
Year-year data rose 1.8%, surpassing the 1.2% expectation, alleviating concerns about demand.
In addition, the Sentix investor confidence index soared to 4.5 in July, far higher than the consensus of 0.2. This data marks the first significant improvement in sentiment in months, suggesting that optimism is rising in the region.
Euro/JPY remains sensitive to trade negotiations and tariff threats
U.S. President Trump and European www.xmtraders.commission President Ursula von der Leyen discussed bilateral relations on a phone call on Sunday.
They were called together to speed up negotiations on the U.S.-EU trade deal before Wednesday’s tariff deadline.
Reuters quoted European www.xmtraders.commission spokesman Stefan DeKells in a report on MondayMerkel said there was a "good exchange" between the two leaders.
Neither Japan nor the EU has reached a trade agreement with the United States. Negotiations with Japan were stopped halfway due to its reluctance to buy US rice imports.
Bloomberg reported that President Trump has sent a letter to Japan informing them that they will impose a 25% tariff on all goods imported to the United States, which is expected to take effect from August 1.
Euro/JPY hovered around the 171.00 psychological resistance level
Euro/JPY continued to rise, breaking through the 78.6% Fibonacci retracement level of 170.93 from July to August 2024.
The 10-day simple moving average (SMA) provides support at 169.64, and the 20-day SMA forms an additional price bottom at 168.30. The moving average maintains a steep slope, strengthening bullish conditions.
However, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) hovers above 73 in the overbought area, suggesting a possible risk of a pullback or consolidation in the short term.
The real-time resistance is around 171.30, followed by the key 173.00 level and July 2024 high of 175.43.
In the downward direction, the front resistance level 170.00 and the 61.8% retracement level 167.40 are now used as support. The technical structure remains positive as long as the price remains above the 168.30–167.40 area.
