The yen fell to its weakest level since July 2024 as investors reduced risks ahead of the weekend, as the ongoing Middle East war pushed up oil prices and heightened inflation concerns, according to the latest reports on Friday (March 13).
With Brent crude oil prices hovering around $100 a barrel after one of the most volatile trading weeks in history, the yen fell as much as 0.2% against the dollar to 159.69 yen per dollar.
Japanese government bonds also fell, with the 10-year Japanese government bond yield rising 5.5 basis points to 2.235%.
Higher crude oil prices are putting pressure on inflation in Japan, which relies heavily on Middle Eastern oil.
Meanwhile, traders said, hedge funds have been buying short-term U.S. dollar call options against a variety of currencies to hedge against the risk that weekend Iran war news could cause the dollar to gap higher next Monday.
Takafumi Onodera, who is in charge of sales and trading at Mitsubishi UFJ Trust & Banking Corp.'s New York branch, said: "If oil prices and yields continue to rise due to the Iran war, USD/JPY may gradually approach the 160 level. Actual intervention may be difficult, which means USD/JPY may continue to rise."
The yen's fall has brought it close to the level where Japanese authorities have previously intervened to support the currency. However, strategists believe the threshold for intervention remains high as the Iran conflict and the resilience of U.S. economic data fundamentally push the dollar higher.
Bloomberg Strategist Mark Cranfield said: "As they consider when to curb yen weakness, the last thing Japanese authorities want to see is a continued rise in short-end U.S. Treasury yields. With two-year U.S. Treasury yields breaching an important ceiling, this is a sign of the dollar ahead of a meeting where the Bank of Japan is expected to keep interest rates unchanged. "Providing momentum for further gains."
Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama told reporters on Friday that financial authorities are in closer contact with the United States than usual and she will avoid www.xmtraders.commenting on currency intervention.
