The Canadian federal government plans to support the country's steel industry in coping with the impact of damaging U.S. tariffs by restricting steel imports and reducing interprovincial rail freight rates.
Prime Minister Mark Carney will announce the new measures later on Wednesday (November 26) local time, according to a government official who was not authorized to disclose details before the announcement.
According to the Prime Minister’s public schedule, Carney will announce “new measures to protect and transform Canada’s strategic industries” at 4:15 am Beijing time on Thursday.
The government plans to further cut steel imports from countries without free trade agreements to 20% from the current 50% of 2024 levels, the official said.
