On Tuesday (November 25) during the European trading session, the US dollar/yen exchange rate fell, mainly due to market speculation that the Japanese authorities may take intervention measures to support the local currency. USD/JPY first rose to around 157.0 during the day, then fluctuated downwards, and fell to an intraday low of 156.28 in late trading. The overall pattern showed a "high rise and fall + weak shock" pattern.
Takuji Aida, an adviser to Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae, said Tokyo is ready to actively intervene in the currency market to offset the negative impact of the weak yen on the economy.
Japanese Economic Minister Mamoru Kiuchi said that the government is paying close attention to currency trends with a high degree of urgency, including various speculative behaviors.
Last Friday, Finance Minister Katayama said at a press conference that if the yen depreciates sharply again and falls to the 158-160 yen range, then the risk of the government choosing to intervene does exist.
Since Sanae Takaichi was elected prime minister in early October, the yen has continued to weaken against the US dollar. Takaichi Sanae's government launched a massive new fiscal stimulus package and sent a signal to support loose monetary policy.
In the United States, Federal Reserve Chairman Christopher Waller made dovish remarks on Monday.
